Why Own a Norfolk Terrier Dog as Pet
- By: Jenny Styles,

If you are planning to get a Norfolk terrier pet dog, here are some things you should know:

The Norfolk terrier originated from England. It is actually very affectionate and does not exhibit a disagreeable nature. Because of this, many people like to keep them as pets. However, there can be quite some difficulty housetraining a Norfolk terrier pet dog. This is because of the fact that a Norfolk terrier pet dog can be quite stubborn. The best method recommended for this breed is crate training.

What is crate training? Well, it involves training your Norfolk terrier pet dog to stay in a crate when it is left unsupervised. Used humanely, a crate can be a great den for your Norfolk terrier pet dog. This will help your Norfolk terrier pet dog when it needs some sort of privacy or alone time. This will also train your Norfolk terrier pet dog not to soil around the house. One advantage of crate training is the fact that you can be reassured that your pet will be safe even if it is left unsupervised. Traveling will also be much more comfortable, since your Norfolk terrier pet dog will have adjusted to his den.

A Norfolk terrier pet dog does not naturally shed its fur. This fact has a good side and a bad side. On the good side, no shedding means no mess. This means that they can be kept indoors without risk of leaving fur on your floor. However, you do need to take your Norfolk terrier pet dog to a groomer twice a year in order to strip the coat. This is done in order to promote the growth of a new weather-resistant coat. In a sense, this allows your Norfolk terrier pet dog to freshen up.

In order to properly care for the coat of your Norfolk terrier pet dog, you need to brush it at least twice a day. This will help get rid of tangles and prevent matting.

Ideally, a Norfolk terrier pet dog should be kept in a place with a fenced yard so that it can have a large space to romp around. This is because of the fact that Norfolk terrier pet dogs thrive on activity. Boredom for this breed usually leads to destruction so you should try to keep it occupied.

The best quality that a Norfolk terrier pet dog exhibits is the ability to get along with other pets. They also love children. This means that kids will have a lot of fun with a Norfolk terrier pet dog. You should be careful however, as Norfolk terrier pet dogs may perceive smaller animals as prey.

One thing that may be admired in a Norfolk terrier pet dog is the fact that though it is not aggressive, it is generally a courageous breed. Because of this, a Norfolk terrier pet dog can make an excellent watchdog. Another factor that contributes to this is the fact that a Norfolk terrier pet dog is usually very alert and will bark immediately to alert the family.

Before you get a Norfolk terrier pet dog, you need to make sure that you gather as much information as possible. By understanding the different aspects of the Norfolk terrier pet dog, you will make sure that you have the ability to care for one.

* And at number five on that list is the Doberman.
It is important that the Doberman is trained early on in its life, as they can be quite temperamental.

If they are trained they can be great family dogs and really good with children despite their reputation.

They are highly intelligent, and like many intelligent dogs are very protective of their master and family.

* Number four is the Golden Retriever, which is often regarded as one of the most popular breeds of dog. They are great with children and are a very loyal and loving dog.

It is not uncommon to see Golden Retrievers winning dog competitions where intelligence is of importance.

* Number three on our list is a dog that is often associated with police work.

Yes, it’s the German Shepherd, and it is chosen for its police work due to its intelligence. They make great family dogs and love children.

They need to be kept busy with work or some form of stimulation otherwise they can become depressed and unhappy. They need to know who their master is from a young age to ensure both they and the family get the most out of their relationship.

* The second most intelligent dog might surprise a lot of people.

Yes the Poodle comes in at number two on our list of intelligent dogs. They love people, and because of this they don’t like to be left alone.

They are very protective and can become quite vicious if anybody encroaches upon their property or territory.

* And the number one all-time most intelligent dog of all is the Border Collie

Dog Barking Tips 101

Why is the Dog Barking

There is nothing quite as annoying in a quiet neighborhood as a dog that continues to bark all day.

There is always a reason why a dog will continue to bark and more often than not it is related to boredom.

Alternatively the dog could be hungry and wanting food or water, or quite possibly they don’t have sufficient shelter from the elements whether in a hot or cold climate.

If these problems can be addressed this might be all that is needed to stop the dog from barking all day.

You need to be aware of any other factors, and it is wise to ensure that your dog’s needs are being met.

Toys can help relieve the boredom and exercise before extended periods where the dog will be left on it’s own can help to settle the dog down as it will be more likely to sleep while you are away.

More often than not the problem lies with a lack of training, as the dog has not been taught to remain silent.

Correct training will not only ensure you have a happier pet but the neighbors will also be happy that your contented dog is a quiet dog that will only bark when allowed or when there is an emergency.

Your dog needs to know that it will not be rewarded simply by barking for attention and when it learns that it will get sufficient attention without the need to bark you will have solved it’s barking problem.
Most people are unaware that their dog might be barking all day, as they are away at work and unable to hear the noise.

In those situations a friendly neighborhood chat might reveal exactly what your beloved dog is like while you are away.If your dog does start to bark as soon as you leave the property you can sneak back up on it, ensuring that it cannot smell you by approaching from downwind, and then surprise it and reprimand it for barking.

It will then be unsure whether you will return at any other time and will be less likely to continue barking knowing that it will get reprimanded.

Whining Dog Tips

Stop that Dog from Whining

So you have a problem with a whining dog?

It is not unusual for people to have problems, particularly with puppies whining all day long.

Most puppies will outgrow this behavior.

They generally whine for two reasons. For attention and when they are anxious.

If they want attention, they will continue to whine if that attention attracts a reward.

It is better just to give your dog attention in the form of eye contact rather than a reward to stop it from whining, as a reward will only encourage it to whine all the more.

Often the best solution is to ignore the dog completely until the whining stops no matter how long it might take.

When the dog realizes that it is not getting the reward it expects from whining it will tend to stop.

An alternative method is to blow a whistle when your dog is whining and when it stops you stop.

Often this method works faster than simply ignoring it.Another reason why dogs whine is because they are anxious. Particularly when nobody is around and they have separation anxiety.

This can be more difficult, if you are unable to find somebody to mind the dog when you’re away.

Leaving your dog with suitable toys to play with, fresh food and water can assist, and also getting it used to you being away by starting off with shorter periods apart as discussed in a previous newsletter.

Another method to stop your dog from whining is to buy a clicker from a pet store and ignore the whining until it stops. Once the dog stops whining, wait for a few seconds and then click the clicker, and then reward it in some manner.

The dog will soon learn that the reward comes from its silence.
