- By: Jenny Styles,

If you are planning to get a Norfolk terrier pet dog, here are some things you should know:

The Norfolk terrier originated from England. It is actually very affectionate and does not exhibit a disagreeable nature. Because of this, many people like to keep them as pets. However, there can be quite some difficulty housetraining a Norfolk terrier pet dog. This is because of the fact that a Norfolk terrier pet dog can be quite stubborn. The best method recommended for this breed is crate training.

What is crate training? Well, it involves training your Norfolk terrier pet dog to stay in a crate when it is left unsupervised. Used humanely, a crate can be a great den for your Norfolk terrier pet dog. This will help your Norfolk terrier pet dog when it needs some sort of privacy or alone time. This will also train your Norfolk terrier pet dog not to soil around the house. One advantage of crate training is the fact that you can be reassured that your pet will be safe even if it is left unsupervised. Traveling will also be much more comfortable, since your Norfolk terrier pet dog will have adjusted to his den.

A Norfolk terrier pet dog does not naturally shed its fur. This fact has a good side and a bad side. On the good side, no shedding means no mess. This means that they can be kept indoors without risk of leaving fur on your floor. However, you do need to take your Norfolk terrier pet dog to a groomer twice a year in order to strip the coat. This is done in order to promote the growth of a new weather-resistant coat. In a sense, this allows your Norfolk terrier pet dog to freshen up.

In order to properly care for the coat of your Norfolk terrier pet dog, you need to brush it at least twice a day. This will help get rid of tangles and prevent matting.

Ideally, a Norfolk terrier pet dog should be kept in a place with a fenced yard so that it can have a large space to romp around. This is because of the fact that Norfolk terrier pet dogs thrive on activity. Boredom for this breed usually leads to destruction so you should try to keep it occupied.

The best quality that a Norfolk terrier pet dog exhibits is the ability to get along with other pets. They also love children. This means that kids will have a lot of fun with a Norfolk terrier pet dog. You should be careful however, as Norfolk terrier pet dogs may perceive smaller animals as prey.

One thing that may be admired in a Norfolk terrier pet dog is the fact that though it is not aggressive, it is generally a courageous breed. Because of this, a Norfolk terrier pet dog can make an excellent watchdog. Another factor that contributes to this is the fact that a Norfolk terrier pet dog is usually very alert and will bark immediately to alert the family.

Before you get a Norfolk terrier pet dog, you need to make sure that you gather as much information as possible. By understanding the different aspects of the Norfolk terrier pet dog, you will make sure that you have the ability to care for one.

A look at the top five dogs based on intelligence.

* And at number five on that list is the Doberman.
It is important that the Doberman is trained early on in its life, as they can be quite temperamental.

If they are trained they can be great family dogs and really good with children despite their reputation.

They are highly intelligent, and like many intelligent dogs are very protective of their master and family.

* Number four is the Golden Retriever, which is often regarded as one of the most popular breeds of dog. They are great with children and are a very loyal and loving dog.

It is not uncommon to see Golden Retrievers winning dog competitions where intelligence is of importance.

* Number three on our list is a dog that is often associated with police work.

Yes, it’s the German Shepherd, and it is chosen for its police work due to its intelligence. They make great family dogs and love children.

They need to be kept busy with work or some form of stimulation otherwise they can become depressed and unhappy. They need to know who their master is from a young age to ensure both they and the family get the most out of their relationship.

* The second most intelligent dog might surprise a lot of people.

Not only for the fact that they are highly intelligent, but also because they are one of the easiest dogs to train. And that dog is the Poodle.

Yes the Poodle comes in at number two on our list of intelligent dogs. They love people, and because of this they don’t like to be left alone.

They are very protective and can become quite vicious if anybody encroaches upon their property or territory.

* And the number one all-time most intelligent dog of all is the Border Collie

The Border Collie is another dog that is often seen winning competitions. They’re highly intelligent, but along with that intelligence comes the need for them to be stimulated regularly.

They’re happiest when they’re working or performing in competitions or dog trials. So there you go, if you have a Border Collie, you know you have the most intelligent dog in the world, provided of course, that you have trained it well.

Why is the Dog Barking

There is nothing quite as annoying in a quiet neighborhood as a dog that continues to bark all day.

There is always a reason why a dog will continue to bark and more often than not it is related to boredom.

Alternatively the dog could be hungry and wanting food or water, or quite possibly they don’t have sufficient shelter from the elements whether in a hot or cold climate.

If these problems can be addressed this might be all that is needed to stop the dog from barking all day.

You need to be aware of any other factors, and it is wise to ensure that your dog’s needs are being met.

Toys can help relieve the boredom and exercise before extended periods where the dog will be left on it’s own can help to settle the dog down as it will be more likely to sleep while you are away.

More often than not the problem lies with a lack of training, as the dog has not been taught to remain silent.

Correct training will not only ensure you have a happier pet but the neighbors will also be happy that your contented dog is a quiet dog that will only bark when allowed or when there is an emergency.

Your dog needs to know that it will not be rewarded simply by barking for attention and when it learns that it will get sufficient attention without the need to bark you will have solved it’s barking problem.
Most people are unaware that their dog might be barking all day, as they are away at work and unable to hear the noise.

In those situations a friendly neighborhood chat might reveal exactly what your beloved dog is like while you are away.If your dog does start to bark as soon as you leave the property you can sneak back up on it, ensuring that it cannot smell you by approaching from downwind, and then surprise it and reprimand it for barking.

It will then be unsure whether you will return at any other time and will be less likely to continue barking knowing that it will get reprimanded.

So you have a problem with a whining dog?

It is not unusual for people to have problems, particularly with puppies whining all day long.

Most puppies will outgrow this behavior.

They generally whine for two reasons. For attention and when they are anxious.

If they want attention, they will continue to whine if that attention attracts a reward.

It is better just to give your dog attention in the form of eye contact rather than a reward to stop it from whining, as a reward will only encourage it to whine all the more.

Often the best solution is to ignore the dog completely until the whining stops no matter how long it might take.

When the dog realizes that it is not getting the reward it expects from whining it will tend to stop.

An alternative method is to blow a whistle when your dog is whining and when it stops you stop.

Often this method works faster than simply ignoring it.Another reason why dogs whine is because they are anxious. Particularly when nobody is around and they have separation anxiety.

This can be more difficult, if you are unable to find somebody to mind the dog when you’re away.

Leaving your dog with suitable toys to play with, fresh food and water can assist, and also getting it used to you being away by starting off with shorter periods apart as discussed in a previous newsletter.

Another method to stop your dog from whining is to buy a clicker from a pet store and ignore the whining until it stops. Once the dog stops whining, wait for a few seconds and then click the clicker, and then reward it in some manner.

The dog will soon learn that the reward comes from its silence.

A Diet of Good Food and Good Exercise

Dog Quote: You never realize a dog is a man’s best friend until you start betting on horses.
….Anonymous

To stay fit and healthy and happy and strong, a dog needs good exercise and good food just as humans do.

They’re an important part of our families, and they rely on us understanding their needs, as they cannot talk to us.

Fortunately, dogs are a bit more resilient than humans but they still do need regular exercise and good food.

One of the benefits of owning a dog is the fact that in many cases, knowing that they need exercise is a good reason for us to get out and exercise as well.

So you could say that owning a dog actually keeps humans healthier. Certainly a well-trained dog keeps us a lot happier.

There are many benefits that can be gained from owning a dog but you only get as much out of them as you put into them.

Good training, good shelter, good food, fresh water, regular exercise and a happy home are all that a dog needs to be content.

Just as the wrong foods can be very detrimental to the health of humans, the same goes for the health of dogs.

We have already discussed some of the nutritional requirements in an earlier newsletter and in the next newsletter we will be looking at some items that can be quite dangerous to dogs such as chocolate.

Until then, feed your dog premium pet food and fresh meat and make sure you get out and take them for a walk or run.

All About Training Your Dog

by Gerry Ronson

Learning how to train your dog and when to train your dog is going to be the most important aspect you should consider when you are choosing a dog for a pet. There are some dog breeds that do not train easily and others that just love to show off. When you consider the type of dog breed you would like to have you will need to understand the training process. While we can go into a few how to train your dog tips, you will find the best resource is going to be a dog training facility.

Dog training should be done as early as possible. While most dogs can learn new tricks at any age they will develop personalities, as they get older. It can make training a little harder for an older dog. They may not want to pay attention to the master. There are also different kinds of training. First there is just house training a dog, and then there is training the pet for tricks or working. The different breeds of dogs are going to tell you just what they can handle. For instance a golden retriever or German Shepard makes a great working dog. They are easily trained once you have them in a program and work well for their masters. On the other hand a Affenpinscher is going to be more difficult to train, even for house training.

Methods of training consist of crate training, clicker training, dog whistle training, and command training. First crate training is where you have the puppy in the crate overnight, when you are away from home, and at certain times when you are home. The idea behind crate training is that they will learn the behaviors that are bad. Reasons you may put your puppy in the crate include barking, being to hyper, having accidents, or getting into things they should not. You also want to train the dog that they can’t sleep on the bed with you and that bed time is going to be in their crate or bed you have bought for them. You may wish to use such things as noises from a clicker or a dog whistle to get them to come to you or do certain things when they hear the sound. Command training is one of the best training methods you can do. You want the dog to recognize commands so that they listen to your voice and do the behavior.

When you are training your dog you need to have a rewards system. If they succeed at the command or whatever you are trying to train them then they should get some type of reward whether it is a treat or just affection. You have to give the dog some sort of reassurance that they are doing something right. You also want to make them understand that bad behavior will not be rewarded. Think of training a dog a little like training younger children that may not understand everything yet. You need to give positive reinforcement, but also realize that you need to do something about the bad behavior. Just ignoring bad behavior with a dog is not going to do the trick. You have to keep repeating the behavior you do want while telling them “no” for behaviors you don’t want.

Dog training is going to be different depending on the dog. Some dogs have extremely high intelligence and patience to learn knew things and want to sit through training. Other breeds of dogs require a lot of stimulation during the activity while you are training them or they lose interest.

Take Your Dog’s Bed Seriously

- By: Jay Jacovitz, 2008-05-01

Proper support in a bed is important for good sleep and good health. It is no less important for your dog or pet. You would want for yourself the best bed you could practically afford, and it should be just as essential that your dog’s bed be designed with its health and well-being in mind. The family pet counts on you to provide a comfortable and supportive dog bed that fulfills its need for deep, restful sleep.

There are lots of dog bed choices that cater to the various sizes, sleeping habits, behavioral patterns and health issues of our canines. Many are comfortable, top quality dog beds; other choices are not as desirable.

Advertising will display words like luxurious, the best, cool, fashion, custom, designer, orthopedic and discount prices, which are fine. However, more important words that should receive our attention are support, pressure relief, comfort and durability.

Think of the forces at work on your body when you’re lying in bed. Gravity is pushing you down. Your hips, shoulders, joints and skeletal frame are being pushed into your mattress. If your mattress were cement or other hard surface, it would not compress at all, natural curvatures would not be supported and additional pressure would be placed on sensitive points. Your hips and shoulders would be subjected to the brunt of the force and would probably start to hurt and bring about discomfort and less-than-restful sleep. That is why people seek out muscular and skeletal support with as much pressure relief as possible.

Pressure on the bones and joints has a cumulative damaging effect.

The same forces of gravity that cause us to look for comfortable sleep support also affect our pets. To prevent calluses which can occasionally become infected, the dog should have a well-padded bed located where it tends to lie, sleep or relax. Inner spring mattress dog beds, regular foam dog beds, egg crate foam dog beds, shredded foam dog beds and polyfill dog beds will all compact and create resistance at points where the most weight is applied.

Hospitals and burn units have used memory orthopedic foam for patients for many years in the effort to eliminate pressure points that create bed sores. Your dog or pet is also susceptible to the same laws of gravity we all are that cause the cutting off of circulation creating pressure point discomfort. These pressure points build up, and that is why people and pets toss and turn to get away from the pressure build up triggering the need to turn over. The pressure points soon build up again and the cycle continues.

Orthopedic foam can reduce a dog’s tossing and turning by up to 90%.

Orthopedic memory foam dog beds reduce pressure on joints and other jutting body parts, firm enough to satisfy your dog’s instinctual need to sleep on solid ground, while assisting healthy circulation. Traditional material is susceptible to sag; orthopedic pet bed surfaces refresh their form with every use, providing exceptional therapeutic cushioning. Absorbing, redistributing and balancing weight pressure evenly across the surface of the dog’s body as it gently cradles the body helps afford superior comfort.

Equally appreciated by younger pets, the sleep surface offers excellent preventative care. Orthopedic dog beds improve the quality of life for dogs and cats with hip or elbow dysplasia, arthritis and joint problems associated with large breeds and older dogs.

You may want to consider a heated dog bed in winter or a cooling dog bed for summer. If you are considering a pet bed for outdoor use, you should choose one made of high-quality tough materials that can withstand the wear.

It’s the little things that are really big things when it comes to extending the life and the quality of life of our pets.

Training your dog to not pull on the leash? One of the most common problems people have with their dogs is pulling on the leash.

There are many reasons why this can occur, and quite often it is nothing more than excitement on the dogs part.

If this is the case, allowing the dog a few minutes to simmer down before taking it on his/her walk can often stop it.

Once again, the dogs pack mentality can come to play with the dog assuming leadership over its owner as the leader of the pack.

This comes back to the basics of dog training where the dog must be aware of who the master is.

Failure to get this basic dog training technique under control can lead to all sorts of problems, particularly if the dog gets off the leash.

In the presence of other dogs, and sometimes young children this problem becomes pronounced.

One of the basics of dog training is for the owner to establish him or herself as the leader of the pack otherwise no training can be effective.

Once this is been established you can start the process of getting your dog to walk calmly beside you with or without a leash.

And that process can only start if you are able to get your dog to sit calmly while you put the leash around its neck. That is the very first step of training your dog to walk without pulling in its leash.

Once you succeed in that task, you can move on to the next step where you can get your dog to walk beside you without a leash and be assured that he/she won’t run away.

And from there you will not be one of those people where the dog is taking them for a walk.

One of the best things you can do for your puppy early in life is crate training.

Many people are under the misconception that crate training a puppy is cruel but this is far from the truth.

Dogs actually get a lot of benefit from having been crate trained and they generally come to like the fact that they have been crate trained.

Many people also assume that crate training is difficult, but this is also far from the truth.

Dogs, naturally avoid soiling the area where they will eat and sleep and this is one of the reasons why crate training is important.

It is essential to take notes of the times when your puppy likes to eat, sleep, and ‘go to the toilet’ because this will help determine the best times for the crate training.

Crate training is not about keeping your dog locked up for extended lengths of time.

Crate training needs to be handled with the care that one would expect from a family member.

You should remember that, done correctly, crate training will enhance the lives of both you and your dog.

There are bound to be mishaps along the way when your puppy might ‘mess’ in the crate but he/she should not be punished for this, as it is highly unlikely that it would have been intentional.

Crate training is the best method of potty training a puppy by far, so it is well worth doing when they are young to eliminate one area that can be a problem with dogs, as they grow older.

While it might seem that your dog doesn’t like crate training initially, (many dogs will fuss, whine and bark when they first start crate training) most crate trained dogs learn to love their crate as their own place, much like children have their favorite blanket for security that they will carry around.

Crate training usually starts with short periods of 10 to 15 minutes slowly building up to two hours as they become more accustomed to their crate.
